Bangkok District

Phra Khanong District covers the stretch of eastern Bangkok roughly from Sukhumvit Soi 81 south to the edge of Prawet, split into two subdistricts — Bang Chak and Phra Khanong Tai. This is working Bangkok: a dense mix of mid-rise condominiums, shophouse streets, fresh markets and canal-side communities that sits just far enough east of the Ekkamai-Thong Lo axis to be noticeably cheaper and quieter. Two BTS stations on the Sukhumvit Line run through the district — Bang Chak (E10) and Punnawithi (E11) — giving straightforward access to central Bangkok in under 30 minutes. The district is home to True Digital Park, Thailand's premier tech hub. The Jim Thompson Factory Outlet on Sukhumvit Soi 93 and the local Bang Chak fresh market round out the district's visitor appeal.

Areas within Phra Khanong District

Bang Chak subdistrict covers most of the northern half of the district along Sukhumvit Road, centered on BTS Bang Chak station. The area around the station is the most commercially active part of the district, with Chinese restaurants, the Bang Chak fresh market and the Jim Thompson Soi 93 Outlet within walking distance. Sukhumvit Soi 93–101 corridor runs south from Bang Chak BTS toward Punnawithi station, lined with residential estates, international schools and the kind of everyday Thai commerce that serves a mixed local-expat population. Phra Khanong Tai subdistrict occupies the southern portion of the district, a quieter residential zone reaching down toward Prawet.

Things to do in Phra Khanong District

True Digital Park (101 True Digital Park)

Situated directly between BTS Punnawithi and BTS Udom Suk, True Digital Park is Southeast Asia’s largest tech and startup ecosystem. Open to the public, the complex features open-air green terraces, co-working spaces, specialty coffee shops, and an expansive 3-story lifestyle food hall. Its elevated skywalk connects directly to BTS Punnawithi.

Wat Dhammamongkol (Phra Viriya Yai)

Located on Sukhumvit Soi 101 (Soi Punnawithi), this massive temple complex features a 95-meter-high jade-topped pagoda (Viriyadhamma Chedi)—one of the tallest in Bangkok. The temple houses a massive solid jade Buddha statue carved from a block discovered in Canada and offers a tranquil contrast to Sukhumvit’s busy commercial strip.

The temple is visited on this Bangkok Sacred Tattoo Tour, offering a profound glimpse into the ancient tradition of Sak Yant.

Jim Thompson Factory Outlet — Sukhumvit Soi 93

The Jim Thompson Factory Outlet on Sukhumvit Soi 93, about 10 minutes' walk from BTS Bang Chak station, sells Jim Thompson's Thai silk clothing, accessories, cushion covers and home décor at 30–70% below flagship store prices, with irregular stock that changes frequently. This is one of the best places in Bangkok to buy quality Thai silk products at genuinely reduced prices rather than the tourist-oriented pricing of the main Jim Thompson House. Open daily; most items run ฿300–฿3,000 depending on category.

Bang Chak fresh market and local street-food strip

The Bang Chak market on Sukhumvit Road near BTS Bang Chak is a genuine neighborhood fresh market operating from early morning to midday, selling produce, live seafood, cooked food and dry goods to the district's Thai and expat residents. The cooked-food stalls on the market's eastern side are the main draw for visitors — Chinese-Thai roast pork rice, boat noodles and grilled pork on skewers at ฿40–฿70 per dish. The market clusters along the sois just south of the BTS station and operates most actively from 6 to 10 am.

Hotel in Phra Khanong

Eat & drink in Phra Khanong District

Phra Khanong District's food scene is local-dominant — Chinese-Thai shophouse cooking, fresh-market street food and canal-side stalls outnumber international restaurants, and prices are noticeably lower than in Thong Lo or Ekkamai one BTS zone to the west.

Street food

Bang Chak market cooked-food stalls

The breakfast and early-lunch food stalls clustered around the sois south of BTS Bang Chak station offer Chinese-Thai roast pork rice, guay tiew boat noodles, khao man gai and fresh-cut fruit at ฿40–฿70 per dish, served to a mix of office workers, residents and market shoppers from around 6 to 11 am daily. The roast pork rice stalls consistently draw the longest queues and are the best single dish in the market zone.

Local restaurant

True Digital Park Food Hall & 101 Third Place

Replacing the former Piyarom Sports Club site near BTS Punnawithi, this multi-level lifestyle hub features a wide variety of air-conditioned dining options. Choices range from local Thai street food stalls and Japanese ramen houses to healthy salad bars and artisan coffee roasters.

Café / bar

On Nut–Phra Khanong Sukhumvit Road coffee strip

The stretch of Sukhumvit Road between BTS On Nut and Bang Chak has accumulated a solid range of independent specialty-coffee shops in converted shophouses over the past three years, serving well-executed espresso and Thai cold brew at ฿65–฿100 per drink to a mix of remote-working expats and local professionals. Most open from 8 am; the best concentration is in the sois just west of BTS Bang Chak, where café density rivals parts of Thong Lo at a fraction of the rent.

Getting to and around Phra Khanong District

Three BTS Sukhumvit Line stations serve the district: On Nut (E9) just outside the north-western edge of the district, Bang Chak (E10) in the center and Punnawithi (E11) in the south. From Bang Chak, the BTS reaches Asok in about 18 minutes and Siam in about 25 minutes. Motorcycle taxis at every BTS exit cover the district's residential sois; fares are ฿15–฿40 within the district. From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), a Grab to Bang Chak station takes 25–35 minutes (approximately ฿220–฿320 plus tolls and airport surcharge), or take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai and then BTS — allow 50–60 minutes total.
